Hanging a SpongeBob curtain: rod, height, and installation

⚡ The Answer in Brief

Install the curtain rod 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) above the top of the window, and extend it 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) beyond each side of the frame. The combined width of the curtains should be 1.5 to 2 times the width of the rod to create proper folds. At the bottom, choose between 1 cm (0.4 inches) above the floor (curtain that doesn't drag) or 2 to 3 cm (0.8 to 1.2 inches) excess lying on the floor (softer effect). The brackets are screwed into the wall with anchors suitable for the type of support — this is the only step where an error is immediately visible.

📑 Table of Contents

A poorly hung curtain is noticeable even before you look at its pattern. The rod is placed too low, stuck to the window frame; the curtain is too narrow and hangs flat like a sheet; it stops fifteen centimeters above the floor for no reason. The fabric can be magnificent, but the overall impression is botched.

It's frustrating, because hanging a curtain requires neither special skills nor rare tools: a drill, a level, a tape measure. What's missing are three or four measurements that nobody thinks to take, and a width rule that most people ignore — the one that makes a curtain fall in regular folds instead of hanging taut.

This article provides the exact measurements, details on drilling depending on the wall type, and how to handle the two most common special cases: no-drill installation, and the shower rod. If you haven't chosen your model yet, our guide what curtain size to choose covers fabric dimensions, and the article blackout curtain covers darkening a room.

How high to install the curtain rod

This is the measurement that changes a room's appearance the most, and the one most often missed.

The 15 to 20 cm rule

Place the top of the curtain rod 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) above the window lintel. Below 10 cm (4 inches), the curtain looks crushed against the frame. Beyond 25 cm (10 inches) in a standard room, it floats in the void. This offset has a practical function: when the curtains are open, the fallen fabric no longer obscures the top of the glass, and you don't lose light.

The case of high ceilings

Under a ceiling higher than 2.70 m (8.9 ft), raise the rod up to 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) below the ceiling rather than aligning it with the window. The eye then perceives the entire wall height as a continuous vertical, making the room appear taller. This is the only decorating "trick" that always works.

The case of the roller shutter box

If a box occupies the space above the window, you have three options: fix the brackets on the box itself with short screws (check that no mechanism passes behind), install the rod on the ceiling with offset brackets, or opt for a no-drill rod that wedges into the embrasure. Ceiling installation gives the best effect but requires a longer rod.

And the bottom height

Two correct finishes, one to avoid. The curtain 1 cm (0.4 inches) above the floor: neat, easy to vacuum around, ideal with pets or children. The curtain 2 to 3 cm (0.8 to 1.2 inches) longer, touching the floor and forming a slight fold: softer, more elegant. Absolutely avoid: the curtain that stops between 5 and 20 cm (2 and 8 inches) from the floor — this is the "too-short pants" height, which gives the impression of a makeshift curtain. In front of a radiator, the only exception: stop the curtain 2 cm (0.8 inches) above the appliance.

Our Window Curtains

Rod width and fullness coefficient

Two distinct concepts often confused, on which the final appearance entirely depends.

The length of the rod

It should extend 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) beyond each side of the window frame. This overhang allows open curtains to stack on the wall and not in front of the window. For a 120 cm (47 inch) window, plan for a rod 150 to 170 cm (59 to 67 inches) long. If you have the space, go for 25 cm (10 inches): you gain more light during the day.

The fullness coefficient, the ignored rule

This is the ratio between the total fabric width and the rod width. At a coefficient of 1, the curtain closes but remains flat, without any folds: the effect is poor. At a coefficient of 1.5, you get soft folds, which is the minimum acceptable. At a coefficient of 2, the folds are full and regular, which is the look seen in well-decorated interiors.

The calculation is direct: for a 160 cm (63 inch) rod with a coefficient of 2, you need 320 cm (126 inches) of fabric in total, or two panels of 160 cm (63 inches). This is where many go wrong by buying only one panel the width of the window. Always check the advertised width per panel and multiply by the number of panels.

The weight and diameter of the rod

A printed polyester curtain weighs 300 to 500 g (0.7 to 1.1 lbs) per square meter. For two panels of 140 × 240 cm (55 × 94 inches), count 2 to 3.5 kg (4.4 to 7.7 lbs) in total. A 20 mm (0.8 inch) diameter rod is sufficient up to a 160 cm (63 inch) span; beyond that, switch to 25 or 28 mm (1 or 1.1 inches), or add a central support. Without a central support, a 2.50 m (8.2 ft) rod will visibly sag in a few months.

Choosing and fixing brackets according to the wall

This is the technical step. The type of wall determines the anchor, and a bad anchor always eventually fails.

Identify the wall in thirty seconds

Drill a 3 mm (0.12 inch) hole and look at the dust. White and light: plaster or plasterboard. Red or orangey: brick. Gray and granular: concrete or cinder block. The sound also matters: a hollow wall sounds hollow when tapped, a solid wall returns a dull sound.

The appropriate anchor

On plasterboard: Molly-type metal expansion anchor, never a universal plastic anchor — it will hold for a few weeks then rip out with a piece of the wall. On hollow brick: long expansion anchor, minimum 50 mm (2 inches). On solid concrete: standard nylon anchor and concrete drill bit, drill in hammer mode. On wood (frame, box): wood screw directly, without an anchor.

The number of supports

Two supports for rods up to 160 cm (63 inches). Three between 160 and 250 cm (63 and 98 inches), with the central support exactly in the middle. Four beyond 250 cm (98 inches). The central support is installed last, once the rod is in place, to ensure alignment with the other two.

The no-drill solution

For rented accommodation, two options exist. The tension curtain rod, which wedges between two walls in the embrasure: it supports a maximum of 2 to 3 kg (4.4 to 6.6 lbs), so a light curtain, not a lined blackout. High-strength adhesive brackets: about 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) per bracket, usable on tiles or smooth surfaces and perfectly degreased with alcohol before installation. Wait 24 hours after installation before loading.

💡 Did you know?

The fullness coefficient of 2 is not a modern aesthetic convention: it comes from 19th-century furnishing tailoring, where French pleat curtain headings mathematically required double the width for each triple pleat to close without pulling on the neighboring fabric. The number has survived the technique: even on an eyelet curtain, which has nothing to do with a French pleat, the same ratio is found because the eye continues to perceive a fabric with a coefficient of 2 as "well-furnished."

Eyelets, tabs, or heading tape: which system

Eyelets

Metal rings integrated into the top of the curtain, threaded directly onto the rod. They create wide, regular, modern pleats and slide very well. This is the simplest system to install. Constraint: the inner diameter of the eyelet must exceed the rod's diameter by at least 3 mm, otherwise it will get stuck. A 40 mm eyelet curtain will easily accept a 20 to 28 mm rod. The number of eyelets is always even, so that both edges fall on the same side.

Tabs or loops

Fabric strips sewn at the top, through which the rod passes. Gives a softer, more "country" look. Real drawback: the fabric rubs against the rod, opening and closing requires a firmer tug, and the curtain wears at the tabs. A silicone spray on the rod solves the gliding issue.

Heading tape and hooks

A pleated tape sewn at the top, into which hooks are inserted, then attached to rings or a track. This is the most modular system: you adjust the fullness coefficient by pulling more or less on the cords. It's also the only one that allows you to salvage a slightly too wide curtain.

Ceiling track

Discreet, invisible once installed, ideal for bay windows and large widths. It requires drilling into the ceiling, thus a load-bearing ceiling or a special plasterboard track. Gliding is excellent, even with heavy curtains.

Step-by-step installation in 8 stages

1. Measure and mark

Transfer the chosen height (15 to 20 cm above the lintel) onto the wall, first on the left, then on the right. Draw the two marks, then check with a spirit level that they are aligned. Never rely on the ceiling or the top of the window as a reference: they are rarely horizontal.

2. Position the brackets

Place each bracket 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) from the end of the rod, not at the very end: you need space for the finial and for the open curtain to stack. Mark the screw holes with a pencil through the bracket.

3. Drill

Use a drill bit suitable for the wall, drilling perpendicularly. A hole drilled at an angle will result in a bracket that tilts under weight. Vacuum the dust from the hole before inserting the anchor: a dirty hole significantly reduces hold.

4. Secure the brackets

Insert the anchors, screw without excessive force — a screw tightened too much into plaster will crush the anchor and lose all its hold. Check with the level one last time.

5. Prepare the curtain

Thread the eyelets or attach the hooks before mounting the rod. On an already fixed rod, threading is awkward and you risk deforming an eyelet.

6. Install the rod

Position the loaded rod on the brackets, tighten the locking screws if the model has them, then screw on the finials. The finials are not just decorative: they prevent the curtain from sliding off the rod.

7. Distribute the pleats

With the curtains closed, form the pleats by hand along the entire height, pinching the fabric and guiding the pleat down to the bottom. Repeat for each pleat.

8. Set the shape memory

Gather the curtains to one side, with well-formed pleats, and loosely tie them with a ribbon at three points (top, middle, bottom). Leave for 48 to 72 hours. The fabric will then retain its pleats on its own. This is the gesture that distinguishes an amateur installation from a professional one, and it costs nothing.

The special case of the shower rod

A shower curtain follows different rules, because the stakes are no longer light but waterproofing.

The bar height

Install the bar so that the bottom of the curtain is 2 to 5 cm (0.8 to 2 inches) above the bottom of the bathtub or shower tray. A curtain that drags in standing water will mold in a few weeks from the bottom; a curtain that stops too high allows water to splash onto the floor. For a standard bathtub, the bar is generally installed 1.90-2.00 m (6.2-6.6 ft) from the floor.

The curtain must be wider than the opening

Allow 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) more width than the opening to be covered. This margin allows the curtain edges to be tucked inside the bathtub, which is the real secret to a shower without puddles on the floor. The fullness coefficient here has no aesthetic importance.

Tension rod or screwed rod

The tension rod is perfectly suitable between two load-bearing walls less than 1.60 m (5.2 ft) apart: it holds by friction and requires no drilling, ideal for rentals. Beyond that, or for a corner shower, a screwed rod with special moisture-resistant anchors is essential. Apply a silicone sealant around the mounting plates to prevent water from seeping into the wall.

Maintenance to prevent mold

After each shower, extend the curtain to its full width instead of pushing it back accordion-style: in tight folds, moisture remains trapped and mold appears within three weeks. The choice of material also plays a huge role — our article what material for a SpongeBob shower curtain compares PEVA, polyester, and coated textile.

🧠 Tip

Before drilling, stick a piece of masking tape over the hole location and mark on it. The drill bit won't slip when starting, dust will stick to the tape instead of dirtying the wall, and if you change your mind, you can remove the tape without leaving a pencil mark. Three seconds of preparation, zero paint scratches.

Curtain buckling, dragging or getting stuck

Packaging creases

A curtain delivered folded will have creases. Hang it up and let it hang for 72 hours: the weight of the fabric will remove most of them. To speed up the process, use a steam iron at 20 cm distance, or a low-temperature iron on the reverse side with a pressing cloth. Never iron a printed fabric directly on the front side — the detailed method is in our article ironing without damaging the print.

Curtain buckling at the bottom

Common cause: the hem is too light for the height. Solution: sew a weighted tape into the hem, or slide two or three curtain weights into the bottom corners. A few euros, immediate effect.

Curtain catching

For eyelet curtains, check that the rod diameter allows at least 3 mm of play. For tab-top curtains, wipe the rod with a cloth and a drop of silicone oil. For ring curtains, check that no hook is bent — a single crooked hook can snag the entire curtain.

Bending rod

Sign of a missing central support or insufficient diameter. Add a support in the middle; it's always more effective than changing the rod. On an already deformed rod, the bend cannot be corrected: replace it.

Uneven fading

A curtain exposed to direct south sunlight will fade first on its central part, the one that remains in the sun when the curtain is open. Reverse the two left and right panels twice a year: the wear will be distributed, and the difference will remain invisible.

⚠️ Mistake to avoid

Drilling without checking what's behind the wall. Above a window, there's often the power cable for the roller shutter and, in recent constructions, a horizontal electrical conduit about 20 cm below the ceiling. A metal and cable detector costs about twenty euros and prevents a short circuit, a plasterboard repair, and, in the worst case, a real danger. Always drill outside the vertical axis of switches and outlets.

Delivery and lead times

Curtains are shipped folded in a compact package. Delivery costs €5.90 in France and the European Union, and becomes free for purchases over €60 — a threshold that a pair of panels usually reaches on its own. Outside the European Union, the rate is €7. Delivery time is 7 to 14 business days.

Take your measurements while the package is in transit, and prepare wall plugs suitable for your wall: this is almost always what's missing on installation day. To equip the entire room at once, the home and decor collection includes curtains, rugs, cushions, and posters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high should a curtain rod be installed?

Between 15 and 20 cm above the top of the window. For ceilings higher than 2.70 m, raise it to 10 or 15 cm below the ceiling instead: the eye perceives a continuous vertical, and the room appears significantly taller.

How far should the curtain rod extend beyond the window?

15 to 25 cm on each side of the frame. This overhang allows open curtains to stack on the wall rather than in front of the window, preserving natural light during the day.

What curtain width for a 120 cm window?

With a rod of 150 to 170 cm and a fullness ratio of 2, you need 300 to 340 cm of fabric in total, or two panels of 150 to 170 cm. A single panel the width of the window would result in a flat curtain without folds.

How to hang a curtain without drilling?

Two solutions: an expandable tension rod fitted within the window recess, which supports 2 to 3 kg, or high-strength adhesive supports of about 1.5 kg each, placed on a smooth surface degreased with alcohol. In both cases, reserve them for lightweight curtains.

Should the curtain touch the floor?

Two correct finishes exist: 1 cm above the floor for a neat, easy-to-maintain look, or 2 to 3 cm of excess fabric resting on the floor for a softer effect. Avoid stopping between 5 and 20 cm from the floor, which always gives the impression of a curtain that is too short.

What wall plug to use for a curtain rod on plasterboard?

A metallic expansion plug like a Molly plug, never a universal plastic plug. The Molly plug distributes the load behind the board and supports several kilos; the plastic plug eventually pulls out, taking a piece of the plasterboard with it.

How high should a shower curtain rod be installed?

So that the bottom of the curtain is 2 to 5 cm above the bottom of the bathtub or shower tray, which is about 1.90 to 2.00 m from the floor for a standard bathtub. Too low, the curtain drags in the water and molds; too high, water splashes onto the floor.

How to make new curtain folds hold?

With the curtain closed, manually form the folds along the entire height, gather them to one side, and loosely tie them with a ribbon at three points for 48 to 72 hours. The fabric will take on a memory shape and then fall into regular folds on its own.

Installing a curtain takes thirty minutes and depends on four measurements: the height above the lintel, the lateral overhang, the fullness coefficient, and the floor clearance. Once these four figures are correct, any fabric hangs well — including a print as bold as those from Bikini Bottom. And if you only remember one tip, keep the one about tying the folds for 72 hours: it makes all the visual difference, and it's free.
