Washing your SpongeBob towel without losing absorbency

⚡ The short answer

Wash your towels at 40°C, with half the usual dose of detergent and no fabric softener: it's the softener, and only the softener, that destroys absorption by depositing a greasy film on the cotton loops. Load the drum only three-quarters full, spin at 800-1000 rpm, and remove the laundry within the hour. A well-maintained towel retains 90% of its absorbency after one hundred washes; the same towel treated with fabric softener loses a third of its absorbency in twenty cycles. To revive a towel that is already saturated: an empty wash with 250 ml of white vinegar, then a second wash with 100 g of baking soda.

📑 Table of Contents

There comes an unpleasant moment, six months after purchase, when you step out of the bath and the towel no longer does its job. It slides over the skin instead of soaking up water, it leaves a damp film on your back, and you have to try twice. You accuse it of being poor quality. In the overwhelming majority of cases, it's simply clogged.

A towel is not an ordinary textile. It's a terry fabric, meaning thousands of cotton loops standing perpendicular to the weave, multiplying the contact surface by ten to fifteen. Water doesn't stay on it; it's drawn between the fibers by capillarity. Anything that coats these loops — fabric softener, excess detergent, limescale — eliminates this phenomenon. The fabric becomes soft to the touch and useless for its purpose.

The good news: the problem is almost always reversible, and the method to prevent it boils down to four rules. We detail them here for SpongeBob towels, but they apply to any cotton terrycloth. If you're looking to choose the right size, our guide bath towel: what size and weight covers that question.

How a towel absorbs (and how that gets ruined)

Understanding the mechanism makes all subsequent rules obvious.

The loop, the basic unit

On a quality terrycloth, there are between 300 and 600 loops per square decimeter, 3 to 5 mm high. Each is a capillary tube: water rises in it by surface tension, exactly like in a straw. The more numerous, longer, and clean the loops, the faster the towel absorbs.

GSM is not absorbency

You read everywhere that you should aim for 500 g/m². This is a good indication of density and lifespan, but a 550 g/m² towel saturated with fabric softener absorbs less than a clean 400 g/m² towel. The GSM describes the potential; maintenance determines what remains of it.

The three enemies

In order of severity: fabric softener, which deliberately deposits a greasy cationic film on the fiber; excess detergent, which leaves unrinsed surfactant residues; and limescale, which crystallizes between the loops and stiffens them. All three do the same thing: they block the capillary tubes.

The very first wash, even before the first use

This is the step that almost no one takes, and it's the one that determines the towel's behavior for the next five years.

Why a new towel absorbs poorly

Fresh from the factory, the terry cloth has a finish: a sizing treatment that makes it smooth, shiny, and pleasant on the shelf. This finish is hydrophobic. A new, unwashed towel typically absorbs 40 to 50% of what it will absorb after three cycles.

The first wash protocol

Wash it alone or with other towels of similar color, at 40°C, with half the dose of detergent and 250 ml of white vinegar instead of fabric softener. The vinegar sets dyes and dissolves the finish. No odor remains after rinsing.

Color bleeding

The first few washes of a printed towel release some unset dye. This is normal and harmless, as long as you don't mix it with white laundry for two or three cycles. The printing processes used on our textiles are detailed in How are SpongeBob products printed?.

💡 Did you know?

An adult bath towel measuring 70 × 140 cm and weighing 500 g/m² absorbs about three times its dry weight, meaning it can hold about one and a half liters of water. This is also why it takes so long to dry, and why you should never leave it in a ball: trapped moisture in the fold develops a musty odor in less than twenty-four hours.

The ideal washing machine program

Four settings, and you're all set.

Temperature: 40 °C, occasionally 60 °C

40 °C perfectly eliminates sebum and common bacteria, and preserves colors. 60 °C is justified once every five or six washes, or after an illness: it truly sanitizes, but it fatigues fibers and dulls prints. 90 °C is of no interest for a colored towel.

Detergent dose: half

Counter-intuitive but crucial. Terry cloth, with its enormous developed surface, retains surfactants much more than a sheet. The recommended dose on the bottle is calibrated for flat linen. Divide it by two, and if your water is soft, by three.

Loading: three-quarters full, no more

Rinsing needs space. A crammed machine doesn't rinse; it moves things around. This is the primary cause of rough towels in households that do a lot of laundry.

Spin speed: 800 to 1000 rpm

Below that, the towel comes out too wet and takes too long to dry. Above 1200 rpm, the centrifugal force crushes the loops against the drum and they never fully straighten.

Fabric softener: the real culprit

If you only take one thing away from this article, let it be this.

What a fabric softener does chemically

It deposits cationic surfactants with long greasy chains onto the fiber, which attach electrostatically to the cotton. Result: the fibers slide over each other, the feel becomes silky… and water no longer penetrates. It's literally a light water-repellent treatment, voluntarily applied to an object whose sole purpose is to absorb.

The good alternative: white vinegar

250 ml in the fabric softener dispenser, every other wash. It neutralizes alkaline detergent residues, dissolves limescale, brightens colors, and leaves loops free. It doesn't add fragrance, but it doesn't leave any odor either. In modern machines, moderate regular use doesn't pose a problem for seals.

If you absolutely want fragrance

Three drops of lavender or lemon essential oil on a wool dryer ball, thrown into the drum during drying. The fragrance is deposited without a greasy film. This is the only honest compromise.

Temperature and settings chart

Situation Temperature Spin Additive Frequency
First wash 40 °C 800 rpm White vinegar 250 ml Only once
Regular care 40 °C 1000 rpm None, or vinegar Every 3 to 4 uses
Sanitization 60 °C 1000 rpm None 1 wash out of 6
Sandy beach towel 30 °C 600 rpm Shake dry before After each outing
Deep cleaning 60 °C 1000 rpm Vinegar then baking soda 1 to 2 times a year

🧠 Tip

The ten-second absorption test: lay the towel flat and place a teaspoon of water in the center. If the droplet is absorbed in less than three seconds, all is well. If it remains as a bead on the surface for more than ten seconds, your towel is saturated: go directly to the deep cleaning section below.

Drying, half the result

You carefully wash, then ruin everything in thirty minutes of forgotten laundry in the drum.

Remove laundry within the hour

A towel left damp and compressed develops bacteria and a stubborn odor. Program your machine to finish when you are there. If you forget, run a rinse cycle rather than hanging it up.

Shaking, a ten-second gesture

Before hanging, hold the towel by two corners and shake it vigorously three or four times. The loops flattened by spinning will straighten. This is what makes the difference between a stiff towel and a soft one, without any product.

Air dry or tumble dry

The tumble dryer is the exception here: unlike most textiles, it benefits terry cloth, as the tumbling action straightens the loops. Use a moderate program, remove when slightly damp, and finish air-drying. If air-drying only, avoid direct sunlight which dulls prints and stiffens cotton — partial shade and air circulation are better than full south exposure.

Storage

A towel must be perfectly dry before going into the cupboard. If folded while damp, it will mold in a few days. In a bathroom without a window, a spacious towel rack does more for the lifespan of laundry than any product — a point we also address in our guide SpongeBob bathroom.

Reviving a rough or non-absorbent towel

Good news: unless there's actual mechanical wear, a clogged towel can almost always be recovered in two cycles.

Cycle 1: vinegar

Machine loaded only with towels, 60 °C, no detergent, 250 ml white vinegar directly in the drum. This cycle dissolves limescale and alkaline residues.

Cycle 2: baking soda

Immediately follow with a second cycle at 60 °C, no detergent, with 100 g baking soda in the drum. It neutralizes the fatty cationic substances left by the fabric softener. Never mix the two in the same cycle: they neutralize each other and become useless.

Expected result

The towel often feels rougher to the touch — this is a good sign: the loops are clear. A vigorous shake and a short tumble dry will restore softness. The water drop test should now show absorption in less than three seconds.

When it's time to replace

If the loops are visibly pulled out in patches, if the weave shows through transparently, or if the hems are coming undone, no treatment will restore absorbency. A well-used towel can end up as cleaning rags or be dropped off at a textile recycling bin: our article Repair, recycle, or donate details the options.

⚠️ Mistake to avoid

Never wash a terry towel with clothes that have zippers, bra hooks, or velcro. A single hook can catch a loop, pull it several centimeters, and create a snag that cannot be repaired. Towels should be washed together, or with household linen without hardware.

Delivery and lead times

Our towels follow the store's shipping policy: €5.90 shipping in France and the European Union, free for purchases over €60, €7 outside the EU, with a delivery time of 7 to 14 business days.

Between €32.90 and €52.90 per piece, two towels are enough to reach the free shipping threshold — and it's also the right approach: two towels in rotation last longer than a single one used every day, because each has time to dry completely. You can also complement with a bath mat or a matching shower curtain, the choice of material for which is covered in Shower curtain: what material to choose?.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you wash a bath towel?

Every three to four uses for a towel used by one person that dries completely between showers. If it remains damp for more than twelve hours, switch to every two uses. A shared towel should be washed after each use.

Does white vinegar damage the washing machine?

At 250 ml every other wash, no. Modern machine seals are very resistant to such diluted acidity—it's around pH 3 in a full tub of water. Only massive and daily use of pure vinegar would cause a problem.

Why does my towel smell musty even though it's clean?

Because it didn't dry fast enough after washing, or it was left folded on a radiator where air doesn't circulate. A 60°C cycle with vinegar solves the problem, and proper drying prevents it from returning.

Can bath towels and beach towels be washed together?

Yes, same material and same program. Just shake the beach towel dry first: any sand left in it ends up in the machine's filter, and that's what clogs the pumps.

Should you iron a towel?

No, and it's even counterproductive: the iron permanently flattens the loops and reduces absorbency. A towel should be shaken and folded, not ironed.

Do makeup or self-tanner stains come out?

On colored cotton, first dab cold with a little Marseille soap and let it sit for twenty minutes before washing at 40°C. Avoid bleach on prints: it discolors the design long before it tackles the stain.

How long does a well-maintained towel last?

Between five and seven years for normal family use, which is about 200 to 250 washes. The sign of end of life is not the color but the density: when you can see the weave through transparency by holding the towel up to a window, it's finished.

Is a microfiber towel cared for the same way?

No. Microfiber should be washed at a maximum of 30°C, also without fabric softener, but especially without a hot dryer which melts the fibers. Our terry cotton towels, however, can handle moderate tumble drying.

A SpongeBob towel doesn't need anything exotic to last: 40°C, half a dose of detergent, no fabric softener, a three-quarter full drum, and a good shake before hanging it. Five steps that take the same amount of time as the wrong ones, and which make the difference between a textile that absorbs water for seven years and one that repels it after six months.

And if yours is already in the wrong camp, don't throw it away immediately: two cycles, one with vinegar, the other with baking soda, will save the vast majority of towels you thought were ruined.
