There's an unpleasant moment every fan knows: the SpongeBob t-shirt bought in June, worn three times, comes out of the second wash with a cracked print and two centimeters less at the shoulders. It's almost never the fault of the design. It's the fault of a material chosen without knowing what it would become in contact with hot water.
On a merchandise store, the product description announces a color, a cut, sometimes a size. It rarely announces a grammage, even less a printing technique. The result: two t-shirts that look alike in a photo can age completely differently. One will last five years, the other one season.
This guide gives you the numerical benchmarks that the product description doesn't: how many grams per square meter for each use, what washing temperature depending on the print, and at what time of year to wear which material. Cotton: the basic benchmark
Cotton remains the most common material for SpongeBob clothing, and for good reason: it absorbs moisture, allows air to pass through, and accepts almost all printing techniques. A 100% combed cotton t-shirt at 180 g/m² is the industry standard.
Combed cotton, carded cotton: the difference is felt to the touch
Carded cotton retains short fibers that stick out: the fabric is slightly rough and pills faster. Combed cotton undergoes an extra step that removes these short fibers; it is smoother, more resistant, and costs about 15 to 20% more to produce. For a SpongeBob t-shirt intended to be worn all season, combed cotton is worth the extra cost.
Cotton-polyester blends
A 60% cotton / 40% polyester fabric shrinks half as much as 100% cotton and dries faster. On the other hand, it retains odors more and breathes a little less. It's the logical compromise for sportswear or a tracksuit that you wash often.
Shrinkage, quantified
Unpre-shrunk cotton loses 3 to 5% on the first hot wash, which is about 2 cm on the length of a size L t-shirt. Pre-shrunk cotton (marked "pre-shrunk") shrinks less than 2%. If the garment is just right when you order it, go up a size: this is advice we also repeat in the SpongeBob sweater guide.
💡 Did you know?
SpongeBob's yellow is a difficult color to dye: it requires more expensive reactive dyes and fades faster than navy blue or black. This is why many yellow models in the catalog are actually prints on a white or ecru background, and not fabric dyed through. Look at the reverse side of the garment: if the inside is white, it's a print.
Grammage, the number they never tell you
Grammage is measured in grams per square meter (g/m²). It is the most useful indicator for guessing the quality of a garment before touching it, and it is almost always the one missing from the product description.
Levels to remember
Below 140 g/m², a t-shirt is translucent and won't last two summers. Between 140 and 160 g/m², it's light, pleasant in mid-August, but fragile. Between 165 and 190 g/m², you're in the zone that lasts several years: this is where most of the store's t-shirts are found. Above 200 g/m², the fabric becomes thick, almost cardboard-like, reserved for oversized models.
For sweatshirts
A 240 g/m² sweatshirt is a mid-season garment. At 300 g/m², it replaces a light jacket down to about 8 °C. At 350-380 g/m², it's a true winter garment, offering similar warmth to a thick knit beanie on your head. Our comparison of pullover vs. hoodie details the uses of each.
How to estimate without the data
Hold the garment with both hands and look through it towards a window. If you can clearly distinguish the shape of your fingers, you're under 150 g/m². If you only see a diffused shadow, you're around 180. If you see nothing, you're over 200.

Fleece and polar fleece: warmth from November to March
Fleece is a knit fabric whose reverse side is mechanically brushed to create an air layer. It's this air layer that insulates, not the thickness of the yarn. A well-brushed fleece at 300 g/m² keeps you warmer than a smooth knit at 350 g/m².
Brushed fleece versus French terry
French terry (or "bouclette") keeps its small loops on the reverse side: less warm, more breathable, perfect for a sweatshirt worn indoors or in September. Brushed fleece flattens these loops into a nap: significantly warmer, but it pills if you wash it right side out. This is the material used for hoodies in our sweaters and sweatshirts collection.
Polar fleece, a cousin of blankets
Polar fleece is 100% polyester brushed on both sides. It dries in an hour, never wrinkles, but attracts lint and builds up static electricity. It's mainly found for home use, on SpongeBob blankets — the topic is covered in detail in our blanket size and material guide.
Ribbed cuffs, a detail that reveals quality
Look at the cuffs and waistband. A 95% cotton / 5% elastane ribbed cuff will regain its shape after dozens of washes. A 100% cotton ribbed cuff will stretch out in a few months, leaving the sleeves droopy. On a hoodie, this is the first place that shows age.
Polyester and sublimation: all-over prints
When a garment is printed right up to the seams—with the pattern repeated on the sleeves, back, and hood—it's almost always made of polyester. The reason is chemical: sublimation only works on synthetic fibers.
How sublimation works
The ink is heated to about 200 °C; it goes directly from solid to gaseous state and penetrates the fiber instead of sitting on top of it. The design is not felt to the touch, never cracks, and does not peel off. This is the technique used for pajamas with repeating patterns and many models in the pajama collection.
The limitations of polyester
It breathes less than cotton: at 28 °C, a polyester t-shirt feels sticky. It melts with an iron above 110 °C. And it retains body odors because bacteria lodge in the smooth fibers. However, it does not shrink, dries in two hours, and retains its colors for years.
Where polyester is the right choice
For sportswear, swim shorts, tracksuits, or whenever you want a print that covers 100% of the surface. For an everyday summer t-shirt, cotton remains superior.
🧠 Tip
To identify the material of a garment without a legible label, rub it vigorously against itself for ten seconds. Cotton barely heats up. Polyester becomes distinctly warm and sometimes slightly crinkly, because synthetic fibers transmit heat poorly and concentrate it on the surface.
Fleece and thick knits

Three printing techniques, three care methods
The material only does half the job. The other half is how the design was applied to it. Three techniques dominate the merchandise market.
Screen printing
A layer of plastisol ink deposited through a screen, then cured at 160 °C. You recognize it by touch: the design is slightly raised and a bit plastic. Very resistant to washing, it cracks if you iron it directly or put it in a hot dryer. Turn the garment inside out and the problem disappears.
Direct to Garment (DTG) printing
Water-based ink is injected into the fiber like with a printer. The result is very fine, ideal for gradients and detailed faces—this is what allows for precise meme reproductions. The design is not felt to the touch but lightens by about 10% after ten washes.
Sublimation
Already described above: indelible, no relief, but reserved for light polyester. Impossible on black fabric, which explains why the all-over garments in the catalog are mostly light or mass-dyed.

April to September

Washing without damage: temperatures and techniques
Ninety percent of damaged printed clothes are ruined by the washing machine, not by use. The rules are simple.
Temperature
30 °C for all printed items, no exceptions. 40 °C does not improve cleanliness for textiles worn for a few hours and significantly accelerates color loss. A 60 °C wash on a screen-printed t-shirt can cause the ink to crack from the first wash.
Inside out, spinning, drying
Always turn the garment inside out: the drum will then rub the lining, not the design. Limit spinning to 800 rpm for fleece, otherwise the brushed fibers will flatten. And air dry on a wide hanger for sweatshirts — the tumble dryer is the main cause of shrinkage and detachment of flocking.
Fabric softener, a false friend
It leaves a greasy film that clogs cotton fibers (making them less absorbent) and flattens fleece loops. The effect is particularly noticeable on towels and throws. ⚠️ Mistake to avoid
Never iron directly over a print, regardless of the technique. The plastisol in screen printing softens at 120 °C and sticks to the iron's soleplate; sublimation can migrate and blur the design. Always iron inside out, at a medium temperature, or place a cotton cloth over it.

Frequently asked questions about materials
What weight should I choose for a SpongeBob t-shirt worn daily?
Aim for 180 gsm combed cotton. It's the best compromise between opacity, durability, and comfort at 25 °C. Below 160 gsm, the fabric deforms at the shoulders after a few months.
Does organic cotton last better than regular cotton?
Not in mechanical resistance: at equal weight, both are comparable. The difference lies in cultivation (no synthetic pesticides) and finishing chemical treatments, which are often more limited. The feel is sometimes slightly rougher at first.
How to prevent a fleece sweatshirt from pilling?
Wash it inside out, at 30 °C, without mixing it with jeans or Velcro, and limit spinning to 800 rpm. If pills appear, a lint shaver will remove them without damaging the fabric.
Can a polyester garment go in the tumble dryer?
Technically yes, on a cold setting only. But it's not recommended: polyester air-dries in two hours, and the heat from the drum eventually stiffens the fibers and locks in odors. See also our care guide.
Why did my print crack?
Three possible causes: direct ironing on the design, hot tumble drying, or washing at over 40 °C. Screen printing is the technique most sensitive to all three.
Which material for a child who gets everything dirty?

Should I size up due to shrinkage?

Which material best retains Bob's bright yellow?
Sublimated polyester, without hesitation: the color is in the fiber and barely fades. On printed cotton, expect a noticeable loss of vibrancy after about twenty washes.
Choosing a material means predetermining the lifespan of a garment. A 180 gsm combed cotton washed at 30 °C inside out will last several years without a hitch; the same model tumble-dried every week will be worn out before the next summer. None of this is complicated, but no one writes it on the label.
